Lorcana Sealed Tournament Report

Overview/Tournament Structure:

Okay, so as I discussed in my previous post, I've been training Eric and Ben up for a Lorcana 6-Pack Sealed event for the past several days.

It was an 8-person tournament. 6-Pack Sealed means everyone gets 6 packs to open on the spot -- with those 72 cards, they make a 40-card deck. All deck-building restrictions do not apply, you can use any of the 72 cards in your 40-card deck.

We had 30 minutes to build our decks, and then it was Swiss format with 3 rounds, each round being a best 2 out of 3 with a 50 minute timer.

I was really happy with my packs. Got a solid curve with some solid units and a decent amount of battle tricks. Not too much card draw or removal, but enough. Also had a couple cards that can single-handedly win games in this format if the opponent doesn't have a response.

My Matches:

Sat across from my first round opponent. From his first two moves, I could tell the deck he made was probably not the best. Indeed: He played some weak cards and then a couple good trades open for me; I played solid cards on curve and took good trades when offered and won pretty easily. Including one game where Isabela Madrigal pretty much just won me the game (one of the couple of cards that I referenced that can single-handedly win games). I won 2-0.

My second round opponent was much tougher; looking into it after the tournament, it turns out he actually goes to a lot of Lorcana tournaments (37 on his account that I looked at (not all tournaments are necessarily run on that website with that account, but they might be)) and consistently preforms well. He had a lot of solid cards in his deck and made some good plays. I was able to keep better card advantage, however. I played higher cost units, which made my hand not run out as quickly. Once he ran out of cards and was just top-decking, I was able to take control of the board state and win the game. This also featured a game where Isabela Madrigal got immense value. I won 2-0.

My third round opponent was Ben. I had consistently beaten Ben in our sealed practice, but I was definitely nervous that I was going to lose when it mattered the most. Game one featured my Diablo (the most expensive legendary in the set right now that I just sold for $48.99 and is another card that can single-handedly win games (was very very happy to get this card 😁)). Diablo drew me 3 cards or so before Ben had a way to kill it; that card advantage alone did a ton to close out game 1.
In game 2, I was able to make some good trades utilizing Ice Block, including taking out a key early game threat he played by using Ice Block + Sisu. I won 2-0.

Final Results (including Ben's and Eric's):

I won :) :) Earned me 3 packs and a promo card, which is neat; I've never owned a promo card before. In the three packs, I opened a card I just sold online for $13.88.

Ben got 3rd! Was very proud of his performance. In his round 1, he barely won game 2 with 20 to 19 lore (you win by hitting 20 lore). I was watching game 2 and identified two major misplays his opponent could have done that would have caused him to win; regardless, Ben was the victory. His round 2 was against Eric; Ben won 2-0. His round 3 was against me, ofc.

Eric got 5th! Which I was also proud of. He beat his round 1 then lost to Ben and the person who got 2nd (my round 2 opponent).

Tons of fun; limited formats are an absolute blast. Really enjoying Lorcana right now and would definitely put it in my top 10 board games right now.

Lorcana Training Regime

Set 4 for Lorcana, Ursula's Return, just came out. So looking into nearby stores, there's one that has tournaments every Tuesday that's 40 minutes away, which is a whole 20-35 minutes closer than I thought the closest store would be, so that's nice.

They're doing a special 6-pack sealed event this Tuesday that I've convinced Eric and Ben to come along with me to.
Trick/twist is Ben and Eric have both played their first games of Lorcana just a few days ago. Thus, the training has begun.

The past few days have been a lot of talking about the best cards in a limited format, basic strategy, important inking principles and all sorts of related stuff.

Since then, we've done a lot of sealed practice against one another. We use a website that simulates a 6 pack opening, export our choice of 40 of those cards to the online client, and then face our decks against each other. I've played many games games against Ben doing this, and a few with Eric as well. I've also had them go head to head several times coaching the both of them along the way -- giving my thoughts during the deckbuilding process and making comments about their past moves; giving advice about how to set-up for better trades, use cards more efficiency, push for lethal etc.

It's been a blast. They've both been studious students, and it's been a lot of fun to teach them. I'll have to report at some point on how we all do on Tuesday.

Happy Birthday Dad!

A Mash of Half Ideas: Quote, Clancy, Hades 2, Moon Berry, Oathbringer, Yahtzee, Mother's Day

Got a lot of half ideas to talk about, so I'm just going to start talking about stuff and mash it all here.

Put a quote up at the top; my current plan is to just swap it out whenever I come across a quote that strikes me in the moment; we'll see what happens.

Clancy, the newest twenty one pilots album, is coming on May 24th, and I am so so excited. The sounds and vibes of the first three singles makes me so incredibly pumped for the album as a whole. I'll report back once it comes out. And, of course, eventually come back with a updated favorite twenty one pilots song tier list.

Hades 2 is in early access and I've already played it a fair amount, and it's an absolute blast. I'm going to slow down how much I play of it, though; I don't want to burn myself out/burn the content out before the game gets an ending/more flushed out content/balance changes etc. But it's very good.

As reported in the Recently Read/Watched/Played etc. list, I recently got the Moon Berry in Celeste, which makes me very happy. I've set the game down for now, but I might come back soon for some of the easier Golden Strawberries (no-death strawberries). Any of the harder Golden Strawberries, I'm not so sure about 😅

Also reported in said list, I just finished Oathbringer, which means I am waaay ahead of schedule for my Stormlight Archive re-readings preparing for Book 5. I originally laid out that I would listen to Oathbringer through the months of April to June, which (on 1.15x speed) is just over 30 minutes a day, which I felt was reasonable. I underestimated how many hours I could do things like playing Celeste/Balatro and listening to Oathbringer at the same time.

I'm planning on reading a few other things before diving into Rhythm of War, but we'll see what happens. (I'll for sure listen to Dawnshard first, ofc)

Also, side note: I was debating if I wanted to re-read Warbreaker as part of my prepare for Wind and Truth re-reads, and I am so glad I did. I'm pretty sure the first time I read Oathbringer I didn't connect the fact that a certain character is a certain character, hahaha 😬😅. I knew about the other certain character, but not the one I just referenced.

We're currently game 4 into our 20 game Yahtzee gameplan. I asked ChatGPT how many games it would take to mitigate the luck in Yahtzee and show who's the best; I asked it for a low estimate and a high estimate. It said 20 for low and 50 for high, so we started our trek and are 4 games in. I'm sure I'll report the results once we finish.

Happy Mother's Day Mom!!

Updated Top 10 Video Games of All Time (Video)

Thomas, Ben, and I got together and discussed our top 10 favorite video games of all time. Feel free to watch the video here. It was a ton of fun to record.

Funny thing happened, though: while recording/editing said video, I actually decided my #3 and #4 should be swapped, haha.

So here's my list:

The fact that two of the games on this list (Slay the Spire and Hades) both have sequels coming out next year is so unbelievably awesome.
